    QUOTES

T: "Okay. Hello hello hello hello? Hello? Hello? Am I in the monitors? Yeah, okay...Plug in to bug out. Last time we played here we didn't play."
L: "Yeah. I gotta plug before I bug."
T: "We've been waiting about one year outside sitting on top of our van. Did you just wash your hair? Looks good. I guess what we will do is we'll play some songs. And then um...some songs that we wrote."
L: "What the hell? Is John Lurie here tonight?"
T: "How are the lights? How are these lights?"
L: "How are these strobe lights?"
T: "Do we look like young Christians? Do we?"
L: "Ladies and gentlemen, Doctor Jesus on guitar!"
    T: "Oh..ha..Oh...Oh man!"
    K: "My name's Bug."
    L: "I'm the spaz."
T: "I have to take a piss. Whoa! I have to take a piss."
    L: "What?"
T: "I have to take a piss, I'll be right back."
    L: "[laughs] Oh shit."
    T: "I'm sorry, I really am, I'm sorry. I know this isn't appropriate."
L: "Just piss on those guys in front of you! [laughs]"
[Lee makes guitar noise for 90 seconds while Thurston is off stage]
    L: "1 2 3 4!"
    - Brother James
T: "Alright, thanks! Hey I broke a string so I have to tune. I'll play you..I'll play something off my tape deck."
    L: "Please do."
["We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters plays]
L: "Alright, slow dancing, everyone! I think what we need is a little more cigarette smoke in here so could everyone please light up at once? I know Steve would appreciate it especially."
T: "Alright this is gonna sound kinda weird becuz um, I'm handicapped. This is called 'The Wonder', it's about walking around...a small town in Connecticut."
    - The Wonder [segue into "Hyperstation"]
    T: "1 2 3 4!"
    - Hyperstation [alt final lyric in 2nd verse: "my guitar is so out of tune it sounds like shit"]
T: "Thanks. That was a new version!" [someone shouts "Where's Kim?"] "Where? Where? I dunno, she didn't show up. We got this new guy. Ah yeah. She grew up. She's a woman now. We're all women now. Dig it, you know the radio is uh, brought this...fuck...the radio is responsible for all the mistakes. What? I don't..."
L: "It's the funk. We got too much funk. This is called 'Eric's Trip'. And this is as funky as it gets."
    - Eric's Trip [alt lyric: "slippin' all the way to west virginia"]
T: "Thanks y'all. It's nice being down south."
K: "I'm not Steve Albini, don't throw undies. [laughs]"
    T: "Steve [?]"
L: "Alright. We're out looking for jagerschnitzel and spaetzle. Spaetzle."
T: [in response to hammering sounds] "Can you keep that beat up? We gotta do a little construction..."

    - The Sprawl
T: "Alright this is gonna be another 5-string wonder. You gotta do like we do, you gotta pretend it doesn't exist sometimes."
    - 'Cross the Breeze
L: "Terry where are you? Is it cutting out on you? My guitar, is it cutting out on you? Okay."
T: "It's getting kinda hairy. Things are getting kinda hairy. What? Please, don't be so kind. This guitar comes from East Germany. It's an Eterna. We bought it in Hollywood. I don't know how it got there, but it has um...it's the only guitar I've ever had that has a built-in fuzzbox. Which I never use. What's going on, why's everybody tuning? You should have done this before the show! What's going on? Why can't you be perfect like me and Steve? We got these really lame American tuners that um, they're not very truthful. Things like this happen at the best of times and the worst of times. It's kind of classic in a way."
L: "At least you didn't lose a contact lens tonight."
    T: "It's broken! The string's broken!"
    L: "Alright."
T: "Well that explains that! That's..[laughs]"
L: "Alright, who's taking blame for this stormy weather, huh?"
T: "Can Kim's personal roadie please come out here and give us a hand? Oh here he is. We pay this guy a lot of deutschmarks to do this."
K: "I thought you were my personal roadie."
    T: "Okay."
    L: "He's your personal slave."
    T: "I accept."
    L: "Thurston, let's do a duet!"
T: "Do you like, you guys into um..."
L: "Let's do 'Lesson Number 1'!" [starts playing riff]
T: "You guys into like, guitar players? Let's do a Branca tune! Aren't we children of Glenn Branca?" [plays a little more] "That's all I remember. Do you like guitar players who um...[?]" [Lee keeps making guitar noise, Thurston kinda recites some lyrics from Black Flag's "Police Story"] "This fucking city is run by pigs. They tell me to go get fucked. And then they hit me in the head with a billy club. Oooh! Oh let's torture the audience! Let's torment the audience! Excuse me, Captain Trips? Oh Captain Trips? [laughs] Would you like to do a song called 'Teenage Riot'? I sure as fuck do. Is everybody ready? Excuse me, Captain Trips, it goes like this!"
    L: "I could do that."
    T: "Ah, this is lame..."
    L: "You're beautiful baby."
    T: "Ah man..."
    - Teen Age Riot [no intro]
T: "We'd like to continue in this fashion with another song. We're usually really, really uh, really smooth and slick onstage."
L: "Yes we forgot our tuxedos tonight. This next song is called 'Hey Joni'. That's all I can say about it."
    - Hey Joni
L: "Now it's all behind you."
["We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters plays]

    T: "Thanks a lot! Goodbye."
    [encore break]
["Providence" tape plays through encore break]
T: "Oh thank you. Thanks. [?] Man...oh is that real? This next song is about a robot called Warhol. He lives in my building, hey what? I don't understand your sense of humor. It's a cultural block, I can't figure it out. OH HAHA yeah! No. You can't eat [?]"
    - Silver Rocket
T: "Alright thanks! Fuckin' assholes! Don't throw hard shit on the stage! Whoever fucking did that should get their ass fucking kicked, man, if you wanna get it fucking kicked come backstage and I'll fucking kill you. Cocksucker!"
